Mr Ashley Carr

Ashley Carr was born and educated in Melbourne, completing his medical degree at Monash University in 1997. He undertook orthopaedic specialty training in Victoria and obtained his fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2007.

Ashley then spent 12 months at the Orthopaedic and Arthritic Institute in Toronto, Canada, focusing on hip and knee surgery. In 2009 he undertook further training in shoulder surgery at the highly regarded Schulthess Clinic in Zurich, Switzerland. Later that year he was awarded the Orthopaedic and Trauma Care Foundation visiting fellowship in trauma surgery to Hong Kong. While overseas Ashley gained valuable experience in the management of hip and knee conditions, from sporting injuries to primary and revision joint replacement; and in all aspects of shoulder surgery including arthroscopic procedures.

Ashley joined the Melbourne Orthopaedic Group in 2011. He works at the Alfred Hospital as an Orthopaedic Consultant Surgeon involved in the immediate and long term management of major trauma patients, and also regularly consults and operates in Gippsland at Latrobe Regional Hospital.

Ashley has published journal articles in his subspecialty areas and maintains a keen interest in research and student teaching. He is an assistant editor of the Australian & New Zealand Journal Surgery. He is an adjunct lecturer at Monash University.

Orthopaedic Surgeon - Mr David Shepherd
Mr David Shepherd

David Shepherd grew up in country South Australia, and trained as an Orthopaedic Surgeon in Melbourne and Internationally.

He attained his Science degree at the University of Adelaide, completed Honours, and then attained his Medical degree at Flinders University in 2001. He completed his advanced Orthopaedic Training in Victoria with the Royal Australian College of Surgeons and the Australian Orthopaedic Association, and was admitted as a Fellow in 2011.

David worked as an Orthopaedic Surgeon at Western Health and Northern Health and then in 2013 undertook 2 years of postgraduate training in the UK and Europe. He undertook a 12 month fellowship in Foot and Ankle Surgery in Oxford UK at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, specialising in ankle arthroscopy, ankle and hindfoot arthrodesis, ankle arthroplasty and hindfoot and forefoot reconstruction. Following this he undertook surgical visitations with internationally renowned Foot and Ankle surgeons in Bordeaux, Paris and Barcelona. He then undertook a further 6 month fellowship in Lyon, France, at the Centre Orthopédique Santy, specialising in hip, knee and ankle arthroplasty.

David returned to Melbourne and joined the Melbourne Orthopaedic group in 2015. He has an Orthopaedic Surgeon appointment at Western Health, where he specialises in foot and ankle surgery, and general adult and paediatric orthopaedic trauma. He is actively involved in the training and supervision of orthopaedic trainees.

David has published internationally in his field, and maintains ongoing research projects and clinical teaching.

David is interested in all scopes of Foot and Ankle Surgery, including arthroscopic and minimally invasive procedures, ankle and hindfoot fusion surgery, ankle arthroplasty and hindfoot and forefoot reconstruction.

Mr Eugene Ek
MBBS, PhD, FRACS

Special Area of Interest:
Hand, Elbow and Shoulder Surgery
 
Dr. Eugene Ek is a fellowship-trained hand and upper limb surgeon who specializes in the treatment of degenerative, inflammatory and traumatic conditions involving the hand, elbow and shoulder. He has a special interest in the use of arthroscopy for the management of upper limb conditions and aims to utilise the latest surgical techniques and implant technology.

Eugene grew up in Melbourne, Australia and received his Medical Degree with Honours from the University of Melbourne in 2001. He completed his internship and basic surgical training at St. Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, and in 2008, completed a PhD in bone and tumour biology at the University of Melbourne for research into osteosarcomas. Eugene then went on to finish his orthopaedic training in Melbourne and became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in 2010.

Following the completion of his orthopaedic training, Eugene spent a further 3 years undertaking subspecialist fellowship training in shoulder, elbow and hand surgery, including 12 months as an Honorary Hand Fellow at St. Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne and Dandenong Hospital under the supervision of Dr. Stephen Tham. He then continued his training overseas, completing a 6 month fellowship in shoulder and elbow Surgery at the Balgrist University Hospital, University of Zurich in Switzerland under Prof. Christian Gerber. This was followed by a further 6 month fellowship in shoulder surgery at the Harvard Shoulder Service, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, USA under the supervision of Dr. Jon J.P. Warner.

Finally, Eugene went on to work at the Hospital for Special Surgery, Weill Cornell Medical School in New York, where he completed a 12 month AGCME-accredited fellowship in hand, upper extremity and microsurgery. During this fellowship, he was actively involved in the care of professional athletes from several sporting teams including the New York Giants (NFL), New York Mets (MLB), New York Knicks (NBA), and golfers from the PGA tour.

Eugene continues to be active in teaching and in clinical and biomechanical research. He has published over 50 articles and several book chapters, as well as presented at many regional, national and international conferences. He has public/academic appointments at Dandenong Hospital, Monash University and the Austin Hospital, University of Melbourne.

Mr Jit Balakuma

Jit Balakumar is a highly trained orthopaedic surgeon with expertise in lower limb surgery, namely, joint preservation surgeries of the hip (hip arthroscopy, osteotomies and impingement surgery), sports injury surgeries of the knee and scoliosis surgery in children.

In 2008 he was recognized for his talents and was accepted into the very competitive and highly sought after paediatric surgery fellowship at Harvard’s Children’s Hospital Boston. This is an American-accredited fellowship program which rarely grants acceptance to foreign-trained surgeons. There, Dr Balakumar completed a full-year of hands-on surgical training with some of the brightest minds and hands in orthopaedics. He honed his skills with emerging techniques in joint preservation surgeries across the paediatric, adolescent and adult populations.

His unique understanding of orthopaedics across all age groups makes Dr Balakumar quite versatile in treating conditions to afford the optimal outcome.

Mr Matthew Evans
MBBS, FRACS

Matthew is a fellowship trained Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in shoulder and knee.

Born in Gippsland, Matthew grew up in Melbourne and attained his medical degree at the University of Melbourne in 1992. He subsequently completed his Orthopaedic Surgery training in Victoria, becoming a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2002.

In 2003 Matthew and his wife Kate travelled to Boston, Massachusetts where he undertook subspecialty fellowship training in knee surgery. This was followed by a second fellowship in London, England in 2004. This fellowship focussed on the shoulder, both arthroscopic and replacement surgery. Prior to returning to Melbourne to join the Melbourne Orthopaedic Group Matthew undertook a course in advanced Ilizarov frame technique in Italy .

Throughout his career Matthew has maintained an interest in orthopaedic research, and his work has been presented and published both nationally and internationally. Matthew's practice now encompasses all facets of knee and shoulder surgery, with particular interest in shoulder instability syndromes and rotator cuff surgery.

Matthew and Kate enjoy a full and active life with their young son Nicholas and daughters Chloe and Clementine. Interests include tennis, theatre and modern art.

Mr Tim Schneider

Tim Schneider was born in Melbourne. He completed his medical training at Monash University. After working for some time at the Alfred Hospital and Monash Medical Centre he went on to advanced orthopaedic training with the Royal Australian College of Surgeons and the Australian Orthopaedic Association. He spent some time as a locum orthopaedic surgeon in country Victoria before travelling to Texas and Italy to complete foreign fellowship in Foot and Ankle surgery and Ilizarov external fixation techniques.

He was the Foot and Ankle fellow at University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston Texas with a particular interest in ankle arthroplasty, hindfoot reconstruction, diabetic foot disease and forefoot disorders.

He went on to take a position as visiting fellow at Ospdedale di Lecco in Northern Italy. This is an international centre for the study and application of Ilizarov external fixation techniques.

He returned to Melbourne to take up a position as a visiting Orthopaedic Surgeon at Monash Medical Centre and Sandringham Hospital as part of the Bayside and Alfred Health networks. From January 2011 he works exclusively at the Melbourne Orthopaedic Group in Windsor and Hawthorn

Tim is interested in all aspects of foot and ankle surgery with particular interest and 1st MTP joint replacement, ankle arthroscopy, hindfoot reconstruction and forefoot reconstruction. He maintains an interest in Ilizarov techniques.

He has several international publications and is a regular speaker at Foot and Ankle Society meetings

Mr Tim Lording

Knee Surgery

Tim Lording is a locally and internationally trained orthopaedic surgeon specialising in surgery of the knee. He was born and educated in Melbourne, completing his undergraduate medical degree at Monash University in 2002. He subsequently undertook advanced orthopaedic training in Victoria and Tasmania, obtaining fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2011.

Tim worked as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon for 18 months at the Sandringham and Frankston Hospitals before departing for futher postgraduate training overseas.  He spent 12 months at the Centre Albert Trillat in Lyon, France, training in complex knee surgery under the supervision of Professor Philippe Neyret.  During this time he visited a number of surgeons in the U.K. and in Europe, and was involved in biomechanical research in Atlanta, U.S.A.  He then travelled to London, Canada where he undertook a further 12-month fellowship in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine at the Fowler-Kennedy Sports Medicine Clinic.

Tim returned to Melbourne and joined the Melbourne Orthopaedic Group in 2015.  He has a public appointment at The Alfred Hospital.

Tim has an active interest in clinical and biomechanical research.  He has published numerous articles on knee surgery in peer-reviewed journals and authored several book chapters, and has presented his research at national and international meetings.

Tim is a member of a number of associations and societies, including the Australian Orthopaedic Association (AOA), the European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy (ESSKA), the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), The Asia-Pacific Knee, Arthroscopy and Sports Medicine Society (APKASS), and the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS), where he serves on the scientific committee.

Mr Otis Wang

Mr Wang is a Melbourne orthopaedic surgeon who specialises in foot, ankle and knee orthopaedic surgery. 

 

He graduated from medicine from the University of Melbourne and was trained in orthopaedic surgery in Melbourne, Victoria. He has also undergone further training through international Fellowships in Cambridge and Bristol in the UK and visits to renowned sports surgeons in Europe.

 

He consults and operates centrally at Mercy Private Hospital in East Melbourne and Cabrini Hospital in Malvern. He also consults peripherally at St John of God Hospital in Berwick, Waverley Private in Mt Waverley, MSAC in Albert Park and here at Medical Specialists on Collins.

Mr Justin Wong
MBBS, B.Med.Sci., FRACS (Orth)

Mr Justin Wong completed his MBBS at the University of Melbourne in 1999.  He undertook his orthopaedic training in the Victoria Orthopaedic training programme, winning the Allan Frederick Dwyer Prize for best reseach paper (2007), and gained his Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2008.

In 2010, Mr Wong trained in centres in the UK and across Europe for eighteen months, learning advanced techniques in knee surgery.  He gained experience in complex primary and revision knee arthroplasty, surgical procedures for treating knee arthritis in young patients, and reconstructive procedures for ACL and other sports knee injuries.  He also trained extensively in the management of patella dislocations and instability, including the trochleoplasty procedure.

Mr Wong operates at Warringal Private Hospital, Epworth Eastern and Knox Private.  He also has a public hospital appointment at the Northern Hospital as a surgeon and co-ordinator of orthopaedic research.
